SafeHandoff is local-first
SafeHandoff is an app locker for parents. Everything SafeHandoff does happens on your device. We do not collect, transmit, sell, or share any personal or device data. There are no accounts, no servers, and no analytics.
What we store (on your device only)
- A SHA-256 hash of your PIN (never the digits themselves).
- The list of apps or categories you chose to lock or allow.
- Timer preferences and a history of your recent Kid Mode sessions.
- A parent display name, if you set one.
All of the above is stored locally on the device and never leaves it.
What we do NOT do
- No telemetry, no crash reporting, no analytics.
- No advertising and no third-party tracking SDKs.
- No network requests for anything other than what the operating system itself requires.
- We never see, read, record, or transmit a child's device activity, app usage, or notifications. Notifications from blocked apps are muted locally; their contents are never read or stored.
Permissions we use, and why
- Usage Access — to detect which app is currently in the foreground so a locked app can be covered with the lock screen. The foreground app name is held in memory only and is never stored or transmitted.
- Display over other apps — to draw the PIN/pattern lock on top of a blocked app.
- Notification access (optional)— to mute notifications from apps you have blocked so a child isn't tempted to bypass the lock. Only the sending app's package name is inspected; notification contents are never read.
- Notifications — to show the persistent banner while Kid Mode is running.
- Device admin (optional) — if you enable Uninstall Protection, this prevents the app from being uninstalled until you turn it off with your PIN. It grants no other power (no wipe, no password reset, no camera control) and can be disabled at any time.
- Fingerprint / biometrics (optional) — to let you unlock with your fingerprint or face instead of typing the PIN.
On-device encryption
Settings are persisted using MMKV with a per-install encryption key, backed by platform secure storage (Keychain on iOS, EncryptedSharedPreferences on Android).
Your data stays yours
Resetting the app from the in-app Danger Zone wipes every stored value immediately. Uninstalling the app removes all locally stored data.
Children's privacy
SafeHandoff is a tool operated by a parent or guardian on their own device. It is not directed to children, does not create child accounts, and does not collect any information from children.
